Buying an air purifier starts with one question: will it actually clean the room you plan to use it in? A unit that is too small will run constantly and still leave dust, pollen and odors behind.
Start with room size
Measure your room in feet or meters and multiply length × width to get square footage. Most purifier listings on Amazon include a recommended room size. As a rule of thumb, pick a model rated for a room at least 20% larger than yours if you want quieter operation at medium speed.
Understand CADR
Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) measures how much filtered air the unit delivers per minute. Look for CADR ratings for smoke, dust and pollen on the box or product page. Higher CADR means faster cleaning — especially important for open-plan living areas.
Filter type matters
True HEPA filters capture fine particles like pet dander and pollen. Carbon or charcoal layers help with odors and VOCs. If allergies are your main concern, prioritize HEPA. For kitchens or pet areas, consider HEPA plus activated carbon.
Noise and placement
Bedroom purifiers should be quiet on low speed — check the decibel (dB) rating in reviews. Place the unit away from walls and furniture so air can circulate. One purifier per closed room works best; hallway placement rarely helps bedrooms.
